The ‘Refreshed’ Secret: Why Subtle Clinical Aesthetics is Growing for Men in Wigram & Hornby

Bernard Teo • 24 March 2026

There was a time in Christchurch when "appearance medicine" was a conversation mostly whispered in salons. But as we move through 2026, the landscape has changed. In our Wigram clinic, we’ve noticed a significant shift: more men—from tradies in Hornby to corporate professionals in Halswell—are walking through our doors.

They aren’t looking for a "Hollywood transformation." They aren’t looking to change their face. They are looking for a refresh.

At 1 Health Aesthetics, we call this Subtle Excellence. It’s about looking less tired, more alert, and maintaining a confidence that matches your professional and social drive. If you’ve been curious about what clinical aesthetics can do for you, but were put off by the "beauty spa" vibe, this guide explains why a medical-led approach is the preferred choice for the modern Canterbury man.

The Psychological Shift: Why Men are Choosing Aesthetics Now

In a competitive professional world, looking "burnt out" can be a disadvantage. Whether you are leading a team on a construction site in Hornby or sitting in board meetings in the CBD, the desire to look as energetic as you feel is a common goal.

Furthermore, the New Zealand sun is famously harsh. Years of outdoor work, sports, and weekend activities in the Canterbury Nor'westers take a toll on skin elasticity and texture. Men are increasingly realizing that skin maintenance is no different from physical fitness or car maintenance—it is about preserving an asset. At 1 Health, we move away from "beauty" terminology and focus on clinical skin health and performance wellness.

Meet Your Aesthetic Nurse: Jordan Zheng, Registered Nurse

One of the key reasons men feel comfortable at 1 Health is our staff. Jordan Zheng (RN) brings a blend of clinical precision and a refined aesthetic eye to the practice.

As a Registered Nurse with Advanced Training in Appearance Medicine, Jordan understands the unique anatomy of the male face. Men have thicker skin, stronger underlying muscles, and different bone structures than women. Applying a "one-size-fits-all" approach leads to the "done" look that most men fear. Jordan’s approach is rooted in natural results that enhance your features rather than altering them.

The Power of Dual Clinical Oversight

Safety and professionalism are non-negotiable for our patients. Jordan operates under a unique model of dual clinical oversight. Her practice is directly supervised by our clinical lead, Dr. Bernard Teo, and further supported by the elite clinical protocols and expert medical team at La Aire Cosmetic Academy.

This means that when you sit in the chair at 1 Health, you aren't just seeing a technician; you are being cared for by a medical team. This double layer of medical and aesthetic governance ensures that every treatment—from a simple consultation to an injectable procedure—is delivered with total clinical safety.

Sunekos: The Leader in Skin Regeneration

While many have heard of traditional dermal fillers, we are seeing a significant move towards Sunekos. This is particularly popular among our male patients who want to improve their appearance without adding "volume" or changing their facial shape.

How it Works: "Skin Engineering"

Unlike traditional fillers that simply "fill" a gap, Sunekos is an injectable treatment containing a specific, patented mix of amino acids and hyaluronic acid. It works by stimulating the extra-cellular matrix (ECM) of the skin to produce new collagen and elastin.

  • Targeting the "Tired" Look: Sunekos is exceptionally effective for the under-eye area. For many men, dark circles or "hollows" under the eyes are the primary reason they look exhausted. Sunekos helps thicken the skin and improve texture in this delicate area.
  • Natural Elasticity: Because it encourages your body to produce its own structural proteins, the results are incredibly natural. You don’t look "filled"; you simply look like a younger, better-rested version of yourself.
  • No "Overfilled" Look: For men who are worried about looking "puffy" or feminine, Sunekos is the ideal solution. It is skin regeneration, not facial sculpting.

SkinPen®: Medical-Grade Microneedling

Another staple for the modern man is SkinPen® Microneedling. If you have spent years dealing with acne scarring, large pores, or sun damage, SkinPen® is the gold standard for resurfacing.

By creating thousands of microscopic "injuries" in the skin, SkinPen® triggers the body’s natural wound-healing process. This results in an organized remodel of the skin tissue. It is a "workhorse" treatment—rugged, effective, and results-driven. It helps smooth out the skin's surface and provides a more uniform, healthy tone that stands up to the Canterbury elements.

Longevity & Performance: NAD+ Wellness Injections in 2026

Aesthetics at 1 Health is not only about how you look, but also about how you feel day-to-day. Many of our male patients are interested in wellbeing optimisation and “biohacking” as part of a broader health journey. For appropriately screened patients, we offer NAD+ Wellness Injections as an optional adjunct to a healthy lifestyle, rather than as a treatment for medical conditions.

What is NAD+?

NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is a coenzyme found in all cells and is involved in normal energy metabolism and cellular repair processes. Levels of NAD+ can decline with age and in some health conditions, and there is growing research interest in how supporting NAD+ pathways may influence cellular function.

Why it fits with Aesthetics

When people feel more balanced in their overall wellbeing, this can flow through into how they carry themselves and how they feel about their appearance. Some patients report subjective improvements such as feeling more energetic or focused after NAD+ therapy.

Clinical evidence for injectable NAD+ specifically for wellness, performance or anti-ageing is still emerging, and results can vary between individuals. Specific aesthetic or performance outcomes cannot be guaranteed.

The 1 Health Advantage: A Clinical Environment

We chose our Wigram location (1 Henry Wigram Drive) because it offers the privacy and accessibility our patients value. You don't have to walk through a crowded shopping mall to access our services. You can park right at the door, enter a professional medical facility, and receive treatment in a discreet, clean, and modern environment.

Our "No-Pressure" philosophy is at the core of everything we do. Whether you are coming in for a GP check-up, a dental cleaning with Dr. Jennifer Tirtawijaya, or an aesthetic consultation with Jordan RN, we believe in honest guidance. If a treatment isn't right for you, or if we believe you won't achieve the results you're looking for, we will tell you. We build long-term relationships based on trust, not transactions.

Important Information & Disclaimer

NAD+ Wellness Injections at 1 Health are offered as a complementary wellness service and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. They are not a substitute for medical assessment, prescribed medicines, or evidence-based treatment of health conditions, and we recommend you continue routine care with your GP and other specialists. As with any injection-based therapy, there are potential risks and side effects (for example nausea, headache, flushing, or injection-site discomfort, and rarely allergic reactions), which will be explained and documented in a separate informed consent form.

Published by 1 Health | Wigram, Christchurch | Open 7 Days Written by Dr. Jimmy Tiong (Consultant Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist) and Dr. Bernard Teo (GP) If you've ever felt an uncomfortable burning sensation in your chest after a meal, or experienced persistent bloating and pain in your upper abdomen, you're not alone. These are among the most common reasons people visit their GP in New Zealand. In clinical practice, these symptoms often go by two closely related names: dyspepsia and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) . While they are frequently used interchangeably by patients, they represent distinct conditions that require tailored management strategies. What Are Dyspepsia and Reflux? Dyspepsia (Indigestion) Dyspepsia is a broad clinical term for pain or discomfort felt in the central upper abdomen. It is not a single disease but rather a collection of symptoms that can arise from a variety of causes. If you suffer from dyspepsia, you might feel: Persistent bloating or nausea. Feeling uncomfortably full immediately after starting a meal. A gnawing or burning sensation in the stomach area. Interestingly, over 60% of all dyspepsia is classified as functional dyspepsia . This means that even though no underlying structural cause (like an ulcer) is found during a scan, the symptoms are genuinely felt and can significantly impact your daily quality of life. GORD (Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease) GORD occurs when stomach acid and contents flow back up into the oesophagus (the food pipe). This happens because the muscle at the base of the oesophagus—the lower oesophageal sphincter—doesn't close properly or relaxes too often. This backflow causes the familiar burning pain behind the breastbone known as heartburn, which can often be felt rising up towards the throat. While dyspepsia and GORD are distinct, they frequently overlap, and many patients in our Christchurch clinics present with symptoms of both.
