Midlife health checks for women: prevent, detect and peace

3 November 2025

If you are 40, you may be pleased to learn that midlife has been recalibrated, it begins closer to 45. Longer life expectancy, healthier lifestyles and advances in modern medicine have shifted what we perceive middle-age as. People are living longer, more active lives than ever before, and the 40s have evolved from being viewed as the start of the decline, to what now we call established adulthood.

Women now build careers, raise families and start new ventures well into their 40s and 50s. With this extended vitality, traditional milestones have naturally followed suit. Improved healthcare, better nutrition, and proactive medical care mean that women in midlife today often feel and look younger than previous generations. Midlife is no longer of slowing down, rather it’s a time to invest on your health, maximise your energy and future-proof your wellbeing.

However, for many women, personal health often falls to the bottom of the to-do list. Between managing work, raising children, helping parents and daily responsibilities and commitments, it’s easy to delay check-ups or ignore minor symptoms. Yet this is the stage of life when regular monitoring is most crucial. Hormonal shifts increased cardiovascular risk, and a higher likelihood of some cancers mean that women in their 40s, 50s and 60s benefit enormously from a full health check.

Why book a full health check?

During midlife women experience significant hormonal changes including a decline in progesterone, oestrogen and testosterone levels. While oestrogen and progesterone are more commonly associated with menopause, the gradual reduction in testosterone also plays a role in overall wellbeing. Irregular periods, night sweats, mood changes and hair loss in women are most often talked about, but lowering testosterone impacts cardiovascular health, bone density, making it important for women to regularly monitor and manage their health proactively. There is a tendency to explain symptoms under a general umbrella of ‘menopause’; however, this can result in women not receiving the best medical treatment to help alleviate their suffering.

1 Health have designed a full health check package to provide a complete overview of your wellbeing; efficiently and conveniently all in one visit. If you haven’t had a full health check in the past year or have a family history of cancer or heart disease or simply want the reassurance of knowing everything is on track, this package is ideal for you. It’s about prevention, detection and peace of mind.

Our GP in Christchurch provides a thorough top-to-toe assessment in just 1.5 hours, saving you time while giving you a clear picture of your current health. Your checkup combines a detailed medical review with targeted diagnostic tests to uncover potential concerns early.

Skin cancer checks

Women in midlife face an increased risk of skin cancer due to cumulative sun exposure but also hormonal changes that can affect skin sensitivity. Fair-skinned women or those with a history of sunburn are particularly vulnerable.

New moles, changes in the colour or shape of existing moles, or sores that aren’t healing like they normally do, are warning signs not to be ignored. Because skin cancers can grow silently, regular skin cancer checks in Christchurch are vital for early detection and treatment. If you catch suspicious lesions early, they can often be safely removed before spreading, significantly improving recovery outcomes and preserving skin health.

Cervical checks

As women reach their 40s and 50s, the risk of cervical anomalies increases, especially for women who have not attended regular screening. The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the leading cause of cervical cancer and can develop over years without being symptomatic. Warning signs such as irregular bleeding or pelvic pain can often appear late, making early detection crucial. The cervical check included in the full health identifies pre-cancerous changes in the cervix. Early detection allows for minimally invasive treatment reducing the likelihood of developing cervical cancer.

Breast checks

From the age of 40, the risk of breast cancer steadily increases as hormonal fluctuations affect breast tissue. Women with a family history of breast cancer, or dense breast tissue or at risk. New lumps, nipple changes, skin dimpling or persistent breast pain are symptoms that need investigation. However, many breast cancers don’t show obvious warning signs in the early stages. If the GP undertaking the full health check identifies any concerns, 1 Health refers to a breast specialist for further consultation and tests.

Bowel checks

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women in midlife, with increasing risk after the age of 50 due to lifestyle factors, genetics and slower cell renewal. Early symptoms such as persistent bloating and unexplained fatigue can be subtle but also explainable to other causes such as the menopause. Detecting issues early leads to simpler and more effective treatment, and a higher opportunity for full recovery. If any concerns arise from your initial test, 1 Health will refer you to a gastroenterologist for further assessment.

Cardiovascular risk

With the decline of oestrogen during the perimenopause and menopause, women’s natural cardiovascular protection reduces. This hormonal change, combined with lifestyle factors such as stress, a more sedentary lifestyle and weight gain, increases the risk of high blood pressure, cholesterol and heart disease. The symptoms of heart issues are often considered menopause symptoms – fatigue, shortness of breath and palpitations. Routine cardiovascular checks help reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke.
