Mirena & Jaydess: Your Guide to Long-Acting Contraception
When it comes to contraception, reliability and convenience are often at the top of the wish list. If you are looking for a method you don't have to think about every day, an Intrauterine System (IUS) might be the perfect solution.
At 1 Health in Wigram, we offer expert insertion and removal of both Mirena and Jaydess devices. These are highly effective Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC) that offer years of protection with a single procedure.
What is an IUS?
An Intrauterine System (IUS) is a small, T-shaped plastic device that is placed inside the womb (uterus). It contains a hormone called levonorgestrel (a progestogen), which is slowly released to prevent pregnancy.
Unlike the copper IUD, which releases copper, the hormonal IUS also offers the benefit of potentially lighter periods.
Mirena vs. Jaydess: Which one is right for you?
While they work in the same way, there are key differences between the two options available at 1 Health:
1. Mirena
- Protection: Effective for
5 years.
- Best for: Women who have had children, or those who suffer from heavy, painful periods (as it significantly thins the lining of the womb).
2. Jaydess
- Protection: Effective for
3 years.
- Best for: Younger women or those who have not had children.
- Design: The frame is slightly smaller and the insertion tube is narrower than the Mirena, which can make insertion more comfortable for women with a smaller uterus.
How Does it Work?
Both devices prevent pregnancy in three main ways:
- Thickens Mucus: It creates a plug of sticky mucus at the cervix, making it difficult for sperm to enter the womb.
- Inhibits Sperm: It creates an environment that makes it hard for sperm to move or survive.
- Thins the Lining: It prevents the lining of the womb from growing thick enough for an egg to implant.
Because of this triple action, they are over 99% effective—making them one of the most reliable forms of birth control available.

The Insertion Procedure: What to Expect
Many women feel anxious about the insertion, but understanding the process can help put your mind at ease.
Before the Appointment We will conduct a preliminary assessment to ensure the IUS is suitable for you. This may include checking for pregnancy and screening for infections. The best time for insertion is usually within the first 7 days of your menstrual cycle.
During the Procedure The appointment takes about 30 minutes, though the insertion itself is quick.
- The procedure is similar to having a cervical smear test.
- A speculum is used to visualize the cervix.
- We measure the depth of the uterus to ensuring correct positioning.
- The device is carefully placed inside the womb.
Does it hurt? You may experience period-like cramping during and shortly after the procedure. We recommend taking pain relief (like ibuprofen) about an hour before your appointment to help manage this.
Side Effects and Aftercare
After insertion, you may experience some spotting or cramping for a few days.
Changes to Bleeding The most common side effect is a change in your bleeding pattern.
- Irregular Bleeding: Frequent spotting or irregular periods are common in the first 3–6 months as your body adjusts.
- Lighter Periods: Over time, most women find their periods become much lighter, shorter, or stop altogether (especially with Mirena).
Other Side Effects Some women experience mild hormonal side effects such as headaches, breast tenderness, or mood changes, though these usually settle after a few months.
Removal and Reversibility
One of the biggest benefits of the IUS is that it is completely reversible.
If you decide to start a family, or simply want to change methods, we can remove the device at any time. Removal is a quick, simple procedure where we gently pull on the strings. Your fertility returns to normal almost immediately.
