Slow Urinary Flow in Christchurch Men: Is It Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH)?

Bernard Teo • 12 October 2025

It starts subtly. Maybe you have to wait a few seconds for the stream to start. Maybe you are waking up twice a night instead of sleeping through. Or perhaps you have noticed the flow just isn't what it used to be.

If you are a man over 50 living in Christchurch or Wigram, you are not alone. These are classic signs of Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH)—an enlargement of the prostate gland.

At 1 Health Medical Centre, conveniently located near Springs Rd and Henry Wigram Drive, we want you to know two things: It is not necessarily cancer, and you do not have to live with it.

What Is BPH? (The "Donut" Analogy)

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that sits at the base of the bladder. The urethra (the tube that carries urine) runs right through the middle of it.

Think of the prostate like a donut, and the urethra is the hole in the middle. As you age, the prostate grows. As the "donut" gets thicker, the hole in the middle gets squeezed tight. This obstruction is what causes the slow flow and the struggle to empty your bladder.

Why does this happen? It is primarily driven by hormonal changes associated with aging. It is incredibly common—affecting about 50% of men by age 60 and up to 90% by age 85.

The Symptoms: When to Book a Check

Many men ignore these symptoms, thinking it’s just "part of getting older." However, untreated BPH can lead to bladder damage, kidney issues, or urinary retention (inability to pee at all).

  • Look out for these "LUTS" (Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms):
  • Hesitancy: Struggling to get the stream started.
  • Weak Stream: The flow stops and starts or is just a dribble.
  • Incomplete Emptying: Feeling like you still need to go right after you’ve finished.
  • Nocturia: Waking up multiple times at night to urinate (ruining your sleep).
  • Urgency: A sudden, compelling need to go right now.

The 1 Health Assessment: High-Tech, Low Stress

We know men often dislike going to the doctor. That is why we have streamlined our Men’s Health checks to be fast, accurate, and done in a single location.

Here is what a comprehensive check at our Wigram clinic looks like:

1. The Discussion (IPSS Score)

We start with a chat. We use the International Prostate Symptom Score to objectively measure how much this is affecting your quality of life.

2. Physical Exam & PSA Blood Test

We check the physical size of the prostate and run a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test. This helps us rule out more serious conditions like prostate cancer.

3. Onsite Bladder Ultrasound (Point-of-Care)

This is a key advantage of choosing 1 Health. Using our onsite ultrasound scanner, we can perform a "Post-Void Residual" scan. You empty your bladder, and we immediately scan your tummy to see how much urine is left behind. This tells us instantly if your bladder is functioning safely—no need to visit a separate radiology clinic.

Treatment Options: Taking Control

BPH is highly treatable. Depending on your severity, we create a personalised plan:

Medication (The First Line)

Relaxers (Alpha-blockers): Drugs like Doxazosin or Tamsulosin relax the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, opening the channel almost immediately.

Shrinkers (5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors): Medications like Finasteride can actually shrink the prostate gland over 6–12 months.

Surgical Referrals

If medication isn't enough, we guide you through surgical options available in Christchurch, such as TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate). This is a common procedure where the inner part of the prostate is trimmed away to restore flow.

Lifestyle Tips for Better Bladder Health

While you wait for your appointment, try these simple changes:

Limit Caffeine & Alcohol: These irritate the bladder and increase urgency.

Double Voiding: When you finish urinating, wait a moment and try again to empty the bladder more completely.

Evening Fluids: Reduce fluid intake after 7 PM to reduce night-time waking.
