No More ‘Monday Morning’ Toothaches: How Weekend Dentistry is Changing Care for Christchurch Families

Bernard Teo • 22 March 2026

There is a specific kind of dread that sets in when you feel a sharp "twinge" in your tooth on a Friday afternoon. For most Christchurch residents, that feeling is followed by a frustrating reality: most dental clinics are closing their doors for the weekend, leaving you to "tough it out" with painkillers until Monday morning.

At 1 Health Wigram, we believe that dental pain doesn't follow a 9-to-5 schedule. Under the clinical leadership of Dr. Jennifer Tirtawijaya, our clinic has reimagined what modern dental care looks like. By offering 7-day availability, including Saturday and Sunday morning appointments, we are making high-quality dentistry accessible to the busy families of Wigram, Hornby, and Halswell.

The Problem with the "Wait Until Monday" Approach

When a dental issue arises on a weekend—whether it’s a lost filling, a chipped tooth from a Saturday sports game, or a mounting infection—waiting 48 hours is more than just uncomfortable. It can be clinically risky.

Small issues that could be fixed with a simple filling on Saturday can sometimes escalate into a need for a root canal or an extraction by Monday. By providing weekend dentistry in Christchurch, 1 Health allows patients to catch problems early, reducing both the physical pain and the long-term cost of treatment.

Meet Dr. Jennifer Tirtawijaya: The ‘Unhurried’ Weekend Dentist

One of the biggest complaints patients have about "emergency" dental visits is that they feel like a number in a queue. You’re in pain, the waiting room is full, and the dentist feels rushed.

Dr. Jennifer Tirtawijaya (BDS Hons, Otago) has built her practice on a different philosophy: Gentle, unhurried care. Even on a busy Sunday morning, Jennifer takes the time to listen. Whether you are a new patient or a regular, her focus is on providing an honest, ethical assessment. With a background of serving the Christchurch community since 2014, Jennifer understands that for many, the dentist is a source of anxiety. Her "no-pressure" approach is designed to put you at ease, ensuring you feel empowered to make the right decision for your oral health.

Emergency Dental Care in Wigram & Hornby

We reserve emergency slots every single day—including weekends. If you are experiencing any of the following, you shouldn't wait for a weekday:

  • Severe Toothache: Pain that keeps you awake or doesn't respond to over-the-counter medication.
  • Broken or Knocked-out Tooth: Time is of the essence here; the sooner we see a knocked-out tooth, the higher the chance we can save it.
  • Swelling of the Gums or Face: This often indicates an infection that needs immediate clinical attention.
  • Lost Crowns or Fillings: To prevent sensitivity and further decay of the exposed tooth.

Our Wigram clinic is equipped with advanced digital technology, including 3D intra-oral scanning and digital X-rays. This means Jennifer can diagnose the issue with pinpoint precision, showing you exactly what is happening on a screen so there are no "hidden surprises."

Why Routine Weekend Appointments are the New Normal

While we are here for emergencies, more and more Christchurch families are choosing the weekend for their routine check-ups and hygienist cleans. Between school runs, sports practices, and full-time work, finding an hour on a Tuesday is often impossible. By being a 7-day dentist, we take the stress out of the family schedule. You can drop into 1 Health on a Saturday morning, enjoy the easy parking at 1 Henry Wigram Drive, and get the whole family’s check-ups done without anyone having to take time off work or school.

The 1 Health Advantage: Integrated Medical & Dental

One of the most significant benefits of visiting 1 Health is our integrated model. Because we share a roof with Dr. Bernard Teo and the medical team, we offer a level of clinical safety that standalone dental practices often struggle to match.

1. IV Sedation (Sleep Dentistry)

For patients with extreme dental phobia or those undergoing complex procedures, we offer Doctor-administered IV Sedation. Because we are a combined medical-dental centre, we have the specialized equipment and medical staff on-site to provide sedation safely and professionally. You can essentially "sleep" through your procedure and wake up with your dental work completed.

2. The Oral-Systemic Connection

We don't view your mouth in isolation. Oral health is a gateway to your overall wellness. Chronic gum inflammation (Periodontitis) has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and a weakened immune system.

When you see Jennifer, she isn't just looking for "holes" in your teeth; she is looking at how your oral health supports your total physical health. If she notices a concern that requires medical attention, she can walk across the hall and consult with Dr. Bernard Teo immediately. It is a "360-degree" approach to health that is rare in the Christchurch community.

Building a "Dental Home" for the Southwest

1 Health is proudly based in Wigram, but we serve patients from Hornby, Halswell, Prebbleton, and Rolleston. We chose this location because it offers the space and privacy our patients deserve.

We aren't a high-volume "corporate" dental chain. We are a locally owned, patient-focused clinic. When you join 1 Health, you aren't just booking a one-off appointment; you are joining a practice that values long-term relationships across generations.

Your Weekend Dental Checklist

If you are planning to visit us this weekend, here is how to make the most of it:

  1. Book Online: Our online booking system is live 24/7. You can see Dr. Jennifer’s available slots in real-time and secure your place instantly.
  2. Transfer Your Records: If you’re visiting from another clinic, don’t worry—we can handle the digital transfer of your X-rays and notes for you.
  3. Check Your Insurance: We work with major providers and can help you understand your coverage before we start.
  4. Ask About Aesthetics: While you’re here, feel free to ask about our Professional Teeth Whitening or how our aesthetic nurse, Jordan Zheng, can help with "gum-line" rejuvenation.

Trusted Care, 7 Days a Week

Whether you are in the middle of a dental emergency on a Sunday morning or you simply want a dentist who understands your busy Christchurch lifestyle, 1 Health Wigram is here for you.

Experience the "1 Health Difference"—where modern technology meets gentle, unhurried care. You don't have to wait until Monday to find your smile again.

Persistent heartburn or bloating? Dr. Bernard Teo & Specialist Dr. Jimmy Tiong explain the causes of

Published by 1 Health | Wigram, Christchurch | Open 7 Days Written by Dr. Jimmy Tiong (Consultant Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist) and Dr. Bernard Teo (GP) If you've ever felt an uncomfortable burning sensation in your chest after a meal, or experienced persistent bloating and pain in your upper abdomen, you're not alone. These are among the most common reasons people visit their GP in New Zealand. In clinical practice, these symptoms often go by two closely related names: dyspepsia and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) . While they are frequently used interchangeably by patients, they represent distinct conditions that require tailored management strategies. What Are Dyspepsia and Reflux? Dyspepsia (Indigestion) Dyspepsia is a broad clinical term for pain or discomfort felt in the central upper abdomen. It is not a single disease but rather a collection of symptoms that can arise from a variety of causes. If you suffer from dyspepsia, you might feel: Persistent bloating or nausea. Feeling uncomfortably full immediately after starting a meal. A gnawing or burning sensation in the stomach area. Interestingly, over 60% of all dyspepsia is classified as functional dyspepsia . This means that even though no underlying structural cause (like an ulcer) is found during a scan, the symptoms are genuinely felt and can significantly impact your daily quality of life. GORD (Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease) GORD occurs when stomach acid and contents flow back up into the oesophagus (the food pipe). This happens because the muscle at the base of the oesophagus—the lower oesophageal sphincter—doesn't close properly or relaxes too often. This backflow causes the familiar burning pain behind the breastbone known as heartburn, which can often be felt rising up towards the throat. While dyspepsia and GORD are distinct, they frequently overlap, and many patients in our Christchurch clinics present with symptoms of both.
