Complete Mole Checks and Same-Day Skin Surgery in Christchurch: Why 1 Health is Your Top Choice

Bernard Teo • 28 October 2025

Living in New Zealand means living with one of the harshest UV environments in the world. We all know the "Slip, Slop, Slap" drill, but sun safety goes beyond prevention—it requires vigilance.

If you have noticed a mole changing shape, a new spot that won't heal, or simply haven't had a check in a while, the waiting game is the hardest part. At 1 Health in Wigram, Christchurch, we believe you shouldn't have to wait for peace of mind.

We have designed our clinic to be a complete "one-stop" destination for skin health. We combine advanced dermoscopic detection with the surgical capability to treat you—often in the very same appointment.

Why "The Naked Eye" Isn't Enough: The Power of Dermoscopy

A standard visual check can miss the subtle, early warning signs of skin cancer. At 1 Health, we don't guess; we investigate.

Every skin check is performed using a dermatoscope. This is a specialised handheld device that uses magnification and polarised light to look through the top layer of skin (the epidermis) into the deeper structures.

This technology allows us to:

  • Detect melanomas at their earliest, most treatable stages.
  • Distinguish between harmless moles (nevi) and dangerous lesions.
  • Reduce the need for unnecessary biopsies on benign spots.

The 1 Health Difference: Diagnosis and Surgery Under One Roof

In the traditional medical model, if a GP finds a suspicious mole, you are often referred to a specialist or a hospital. This can mean weeks of waiting, multiple appointments, and increased anxiety.

We have streamlined this process.

Because Dr Bernard Teo has postgraduate training in skin cancer surgery, 1 Health is equipped to handle the entire journey.

1. Immediate Action

If we find a concerning lesion during your check, we don't just give you a referral letter. In many cases, we can proceed with treatment immediately.

Note: Whether it is a simple biopsy, cryotherapy (freezing), or a full excision, our goal is to sort the problem out promptly so you can get on with your life.

2. Advanced Surgical Capabilities

We are not limited to simple mole removal. Our clinic is set up for advanced minor surgery that many general practices cannot offer, including:

Wide Local Excisions: Ensuring the cancer is completely removed with clear margins.

Skin Flaps & Grafts: Advanced reconstruction techniques used when a simple closure isn't possible (often required for larger skin cancers or tight areas like the lower legs or face).

Cosmetic Consideration: We utilise surgical techniques designed to minimise scarring and ensure the best cosmetic outcome.

Melanoma: The most dangerous form. We look for the "Ugly Duckling"—a mole that looks different from your others.

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common skin cancer. Often appears as a pearly lump or a scaly patch that bleeds and doesn't heal.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): Often a scaly red patch, open sore, or elevated growth with a central depression.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need a referral to see Dr Teo? No. You do not need a referral for a skin check or surgery at 1 Health. You can book directly with us.

Is the surgery painful? We use local anaesthetic to numb the area completely before any procedure. You may feel a small pinch from the injection, but the surgery itself is painless.

How long does a skin check take? A comprehensive skin check usually takes about 15–30 minutes. If minor treatment is required immediately, the appointment may extend slightly.

Is there parking available? Yes, we have convenient onsite parking at 1 Henry Wigram Drive, making your visit stress-free.

Planning an adventure through Southeast Asia? From the street food of Bangkok to the rice paddies of Vietnam and the beaches of Bali, this region offers unforgettable experiences for Kiwi travellers. However, nothing ruins a holiday faster than a preventable illness. At 1 Health in Wigram , we want you to come home with photos and memories, not a tropical disease. We have condensed the complex medical guidelines into this simple guide for Christchurch locals heading to Southeast Asia. The "Must-Consider" Vaccines While every itinerary is different, these are the most common risks for New Zealanders travelling to countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. 1. Hepatitis A (The "Food & Water" Risk) Hepatitis A is one of the most common travel-related diseases. It is a viral infection affecting the liver, spread through contaminated food and water. The Risk: You can pick this up even in 5-star resorts, usually through ice cubes, salads washed in tap water, or uncooked shellfish. The Protection: One dose gives you protection for up to a year (covering your trip). A second booster dose 6–12 months later can give you protection for 20+ years. Availability: We stock this on-site at 1 Health. 2. Typhoid Fever Like Hepatitis A, Typhoid is a bacterial infection spread through contaminated food and water. It causes severe fever and stomach pain. The Risk: Higher in areas with poor sanitation, but present throughout Southeast Asia. The Options: You can choose between a single injection (lasts ~3 years) or a course of oral capsules (lasts ~5 years). Timing: The injection needs 2 weeks to work; the capsules need to be finished 10 days before you fly. 3. Japanese Encephalitis (The "Mosquito" Risk) This is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes, primarily in rural agricultural areas (like rice paddies). Who needs it? If you are staying in major cities or beach resorts for a short time, the risk is low. However, if you are planning rural trekking, staying longer than a month, or backpacking through the countryside, this vaccine is strongly recommended. The Protection: Two doses are required (spaced 28 days apart, though an accelerated 7-day schedule is available for last-minute travellers). 4. Rabies (The "Animal" Risk) Southeast Asia has a high prevalence of rabies in stray dogs, monkeys, and bats. It is almost always fatal if untreated. Why vaccinate beforehand? "Pre-exposure" vaccination doesn't make you immune, but it buys you crucial time. If you are bitten, you will need fewer emergency injections, and—crucially—you won't need "Rabies Immunoglobulin" (a blood product that is often unavailable in remote parts of Asia). Who needs it? Cyclists, runners, wildlife volunteers, and children (who are more likely to touch animals) should seriously consider this.
